I have always loved chocolate covered peanuts….. part of a Southern tradition I think since as a kid in N. Georgia peanuts were everywhere. We even grew them in our garden (little known fact: they grow underground). I even remember the stomach aches I got from eating green peanuts.
Anyway, early on I found a chocolate peanut brand I liked: Goobers. Usually found them at the movie theater. The name was funny then too, cause in addition to being a common name for a peanut there were other reasons: one, it was a name given to hicks/hillbillies (what we might call nerds today)to equate ignorance and, two, when I was 9 or 10 years old, goober was also a common nickname for the male member. So, being typical Beavis and Butthead types, we got a laugh out of saying goobers as much as possible.
I was sort of amazed some time ago when I found that the candy was still being made. I tried a box and found that they are way too sweet for my taste, plus the peanuts are so small…. but I also found out that I still like saying the name!! Have a Goober day!
